Tax Relief for Mainers IRS Announces New Deadline for Maine Residents Impacted by Winter Storms

Important Tax Update! The IRS just announced tax relief for Mainers impacted by the severe storms and flooding that began on January 9, 2024. Both individuals and businesses now have until July 15, 2024 to file federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. This relief impacts people who live or have businesses in the following counties:

  • Cumberland

  • Hancock

  • Knox

  • Lincoln

  • Sagadahoc

  • Waldo

  • Washington

  • York

With the disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the IRS is able to postpone certain tax-filing and tax payment deadlines for taxpayers who live or have a business in the disaster area. The tax relief also applies to:

  • Quarterly estimated tax payments originally due on January 16, 2024; April 15, 2024; and June 17, 2024.

  • Penalties on payroll and excise tax deposits due on or after January 9, 2024 and before January 24, 2024. These penalties will be abated as long as the deposits were made by January 24, 2024.
